What is the problem?
What is the SCR selective catalytic reduction system?
Selective Catalytic Reduction, or SCR, is a technology designed to specifically target and reduce nitrogen oxides (NOx), including NO and NO2, in exhaust gases.
Here’s how the process works:
- The aqueous urea solution AUS32 AdBlue® is injected into the hot exhaust gas, hydrolysed to form ammonia and carbon dioxide. The ammonia then reacts with nitrogen oxides (NO + NO2) in the presence of a V2O5 catalyst to produce elemental nitrogen and water.
- After neutralisation, N2, H2O and CO2, are produced, which is less harmful because it is the same gas we exhale.
SCR technology is cost-effective and fuel efficient. It reduces NOx emissions by up to 90%. Truck owners say: SCR reduces fuel consumption by 3-5%!
Why is AdBlue purity so important?
AdBlue® is an essential component of the SCR system for the neutralisation of NOx emissions. This reagent is also known as AUS 32 (AQUEOUS UREA SOLUTION 32).
The right to use the AdBlue® trademark belongs to the German automotive industry association VDA (Verband der Automobilindustrie E.V.).
In North America, the name used is DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid).
AdBlue® is a clear, colourless liquid with a slight ammonia odour, consisting of 32,5% pure urea and 67,5% demineralised water.
